University of Phoenix: Paving the Way for Online Higher Education
Since its inception in the early 1970’s, the University of Phoenix has stood for higher education that works for non-traditional adult learners. In the late 1980’s University of Phoenix became a pioneer in online higher education. Since the school was recognized as the first American college offering online coursework in 1989, the university’s online enrollment has enjoyed a steady growth.
University of Phoenix is still an e-Learning powerhouse, with more than 200,000 students enrolled in its online degree programs and courses. The school employs approximately 17,000 faculty and staff members to serve the enormous student population.
University of Phoenix undergraduate online students may choose from among 12 Associate degree programs and 30 Bachelor’s degree programs. Major options include the field of education, technology, business, healthcare, and the social and behavioral sciences. Graduate programs at the master’s and doctoral levels are also available in the same areas of study.
A major player in the U.S. higher education industry, the University of Phoenix actually process more federal student financial aid than any other university in the country. During the 2004-2005 academic year, University of Phoenix students received $1.8 billion in federal student aid.
Even though to many people, the name University of Phoenix is synonymous with online higher education, the organization does operate approximately 75 campus locations across the United States and Canada.
