Self Improvement - Concentration And E-Learning To Meet Your Goals
Posted on July 14, 2007 | Filed Under Elearning Introduction
Concentration, especially when studying on a computer screen requires a different use of the mind and your eyes. Normally we read by scanning across pages but, when browsing or studying on-line your reading will require a more deliberate and careful approach in order to increase understanding and comprehension. To meet your goals you need to adopt a new approach.
If you have been away from studying for a while you will need to think about the effort of concentration needed to start studying again. For those with less time since their studying days, concentration will come much easier. If you did not develop good studying skills you will find there will be some frustrations while learning the correct methods and creating new habits. But concentration is the key to mastery of a subject and meeting your goals, whatever the medium.
Don’t just revert to studying as if the material was printed and don’t print out the material; rely on your notes and your memory. Taking written notes is more important with e-Learning than in any other type of learning situation. Don’t stop taking notes just because the learning material is online. Taking handwritten notes is a key element in moving new short-term information into your long-term memory.
As with any material you need to learn, bring your concentration to the subject and shut out distractions. Now review and scan all the material before you.. If the material content is large, scan it briefly then start to break it down into smaller sections. Read these one at a time and chunk it. Read titles and subheadings and concentrate on any diagrams.. You will start to see patterns in the material which help create mind-visual-understanding associations.
Concentration on following ideas and major concepts more than the actual words will pay off, especially if you let the titles and headings provide you with clues and guidance. By reading the introductory and concluding paragraphs first, you will get an appreciation of the starting and ending concepts which help you to connect the body of work and your concentration effort.
You should take special care of your eyes and posture when reading from the computer screen. Every 20 minutes take an eye break by refocusing them on some object at least 20 feet away from you. Improve your posture by tilting your screen up so that the screen’s centre points toward your nose, helping you to reduce tension and cramping in your neck and shoulders.
The most important key to any type of learning is concentration and the desire to learn. I you can find your own rhythm you will have fun with the process. So as you see concentration and e-learning go together, you just have to remember the differences from paper-based learning.
