Is E-Learning a Solution for Rural Training Needs? The USDA Thinks So and Provides Grant Funding to Prove It

E-Learning is viewed as an excellent means of providing training to people who live in rural areas where other forms of training are not easily accessible.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) certainly sees the benefit of distance learning.  Last month, the USDA announced in the Federal Register the opening of the 2007 grant application window for its Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) program.

Through the DLT program, the USDA seeks to provide funding for advanced communication technologies that can be used to meet the health care training needs of rural America.

In 2006, the USDA awarded DLT grants totaling  $25,853,991, with funds targeted to provide distance learning and telemedicine services to residents of 38 states.  The primary focus of this program is to fund telecommunications equipment that will connect students, teachers, medical providers, and patients for educational purposes.

The 2007 DLT program is structure to award individual grants ranging from $50,000 and $500,000 each.  If you’re interested in applying for the 2007 USDA DLT grant program, see http://www.usda.gov/rus/telecom/dlt/dlt.htm for the full grant announcement.  The closing date for applications is June 11, 2007.

Private businesses and non-profit organizations are eligible to apply for funding through the DLT program.  Full eligibility details are available on the website.  A complete list of 2006 DLT grantees is also available online.
