e-learning is a system of education that involves the delivery of content to a student via the Internet. It includes courses offered through Web-based training, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms and digital collaboration. It involves the use of audiotape, videotape, and satellite broadcast, interactive TV and CD-ROM.

E-learning is highly preferred because a number of individuals choose to learn while working. The most advantageous aspect of e-learning is the absence of geographical boundaries. There are a number of companies who deliver e- learning courses via strong technological tools. e-learning is a self-paced alternative, and individuals can invest time in learning as per their individual needs. The courses and syllabus are developed keeping in mind an audience of diverse capabilities, and are broken into segments to ensure knowledge retention. A lot of research goes into developing programs. This includes gaining an understanding of the training needs and the audience make-up to develop a structured content. e-learning courses can be more cost-effective than traditional classroom teaching, as e-learners can decide to skip the content they know and move onto newer issues. This type of training tends to be more consistent, as there are no issues of different instructors having different views regarding the same subject.

There are a number of disciplines such as management, nursing, education, journalism and psychology that can be mastered through online courses. Most organizations accept degrees that are earned on-line, as they provide more knowledge and training as compared to a full time course. Moreover, e-learning does away with the need to take a break from the workplace to pursue a course, and this can give an edge over other employees in terms of career advancement opportunities. e-learning degrees are recognized and accepted if they are from a reputable institute. Usually, there are accreditations associated with e-learning degrees, and these should be checked prior to enrolling in a program. Besides the cost factor, e-learning is immensely beneficial to those who do not have the flexibility to pursue a full-time course, and who are on the look out for upgrading their knowledge. On account of these benefits, many people vote for e-learning as an effective method to gain knowledge.
